My Story

About

James Innerdale

I have always had a passion for illustration. From young age drawing has been my joy and an outlet for my imagination. I loved to draw and I still have a scrapbook of drawings from my childhood.  As a teenager I would join my architect, father, sketching buildings and I started to create personalised cards for family as well as friends, those for my younger brother featuring his collection of soft toys. The annual Christmas card continues and is now apparently anticipated ‘for those collecting the set’.

I try to create illustrations that are fresh and engaging, but at the same time I love to add detail and humour. Using mostly pen and wash or watercolour, the style of my work lends itself to a range of media. These include illustrations for books, particularly with children’s author Tom Palmer, as well as historical interpretation, illustrative maps, cartoon strips and graphic and technical illustrations.

I trained as an architect and continue to work in the field of building conservation. As a consequence my sketches and paintings of buildings continue to be popular. Whilst I work out of the small village of Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales I have been commissioned to create illustrations across the country, including Cornwall, Scotland, London and the Southeast as well as Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Northeast.
